More than 500 people feared dead in double Myanmar shipwreck tragedy
There is growing concern for at least 500 people believed to have been aboard two boats that reportedly capsized off Myanmar’s coast in recent days.
In a joint alert on Thursday, the UN migration agency, IOM, and UN refugee agency, UNHCR, said that both vessels had set sail from Myanmar’s Rakhine state in late June.
Contact was lost with one boat carrying around 250 people shortly after it departed. A second boat, with 280 people on board, is believed to have sunk off Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady coast on 8 July.
The passengers were mostly ethnic Rohingya people from Rakhine state who have faced decades of persecution by the Myanmar authorities.

The vessels reportedly departed from Myanmarâs western Rakhine State in late June and were carrying mostly Rohingya passengers, according to a joint statement from the International Organization for Migration and the UN Refugee Agency Thursday.
One boat reportedly carrying 250 people lost contact shortly after departure while another, with about 280 passengers, is believed to have sunk off Myanmarâs Ayeyarwady coast on July 8, according to the statement.
The Rohingya are a stateless Muslim ethnic minority group from Myanmarâs Rakhine state, who have faced decades of state-sponsored persecution, violence and what the US has classified as genocide.
