Fate of Netflix & Denzel Washington's Historical Epic Confirmed After Delays
Two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington's sixth collaboration with director Antoine Fuqua was set to be a vaulting historical biopic centered around Hannibal Barca, the legendary Carthaginian general. On paper, at least, it looked like a match made in movie heaven, particularly in the wake of Washington's scenery-chewing turn in Gladiator II, which, if nothing else, demonstrated how comfortably his performance style fits in a historical environment.
The film, which was first announced in 2023, was slated to begin production this summer and had been quietly gathering momentum, with production already scouting for locations in Italy. However, pre-production was put on pause in June while producers and Netflix attempted to come to an agreement on the budget. Last month, Deadline reported that the filmmakers and the streamer were still "working to get the movie back on track," raising hopes that a compromise could be reached. Unfortunately, it appears that the estimated production cost – reportedly in excess of $200 million – has ultimately proven too expensive, with Netflix deciding to shelve the project altogether.

Last month saw reports that the Denzel Washington-led production of Hannibal had paused production due to budget complications, and there are now updates that the project may be “dead”. The film, based on the life of military leader Hannibal the Great in his fight against the Roman Republic in the Second Punic War, was set to be directed by Michael’s Antoine Fuqua for Netflix, yet production had to be ceased when the studio and producers found conflict in the $200 million budget.

Netflix Seals the Fate of Denzel Washington's Historical Epic Ahead of Filming Start
Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua's sixth collaboration just hit a major snag. This comes after Netflix paused pre-production last month.
In development since 2023, Fuqua and Washington's sixth collaboration was set to be a historical epic about real-life warrior Hannibal Barca, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in history. It would have covered the pivotal battles he led against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War.
The untitled Hannibal movie was slated to start filming this summer in Italy, with the production based at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios. Pre-production and location scouting got underway in March. The screenplay was written by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan.
