THE PACIFIC OCEAN — Life can sometimes get lonely out in the middle of the ocean.
Kelsey Pfendler knows the feeling, as she's been out rowing from California to Hawaii since May 21, in a quest to be the fastest woman — and first American woman, and the youngest woman — to reach the island of Oahu, solo.
Pfendler has done it before, though; she rowed to the 50th State with three other women in 2024.
But this time, as she nears the end of her journey, a special surprise — a birthday surprise — was waiting for her.
I can't even imagine how much of a boost this would give someone who's been constantly rowing with everything she's got for almost two months. And given how close she is to the finish line, it probably motivates her more.
