Who is more valuable to the Phillies right now: Kyle Schwarber or Jhoan Duran?

It’s not fair or accurate to lump all of the praise onto a single person for the Phillies dramatic turnaround that’s seen them go from 10 games under .500 to knocking on the door of the NL East division lead. It’s been a concerted team effort, with contributions and heroes all throughout the clubhouse.

However, it’s also fair to point out that some of the contributions stand out above the others. Two of the Phillies’ biggest stars in Kyle Schwarber and Jhoan Duran have been right in the middle of their success. Schwarber became the first player to 30 home runs this season, setting a record for the fastest number of games to accomplish the feat in Phillies history. Duran meanwhile had a consecutive saves streak of 16 to begin the season and has been every bit of an elite closer.

Wheeler looks to keep rolling in duel with Skenes

PHILADELPHIA — Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler loves opportunities like the one he was presented with on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old Wheeler loves the chance to face and beat the best pitchers in Major League Baseball. He was far from his best on Wednesday at Citizens Bank Park, but he still outdueled reigning NL Cy Young winner and Pirates ace Paul Skenes in the Phillies' 10-6 win.

Wheeler allowed nine hits, four runs, one walk and struck out 10 in 4 2/3 innings. It was his shortest start since June 16, 2024, when he pitched 4 1/3 innings in Baltimore, although the Phillies’ defense did not help him as his pitch count soared to 104.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Philadelphia Phillies: Paul Skenes vs. Zack Wheeler

The Pirates are on the road looking to grab a win today.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are looking to end their disastrous run of Paul Skenes starts as he takes the mound for the Buccos in Game 3 of their four-game set in the City of Brotherly Love.

The Pirates have dropped their last eight games in which Skenes pitched. During that stretch, Skenes is 0-5.

In his last start against the Cincinnati Reds on June 26, he pitched five innings, giving up six hits and four earned runs in a 6-4 loss to their division rival. The game that began this streak came back on May 17 against the Philadelphia Phillies. Skenes pitched five innings, giving up six hits and five earned runs in a 6-0 shutout loss against Philly at home.
