'Investment in the future': Proposed CBD high-rise clears key hurdle despite resident pushback
New Orleans leaders are celebrating the council's move to adjust Warehouse District zoning rules on Wednesday, advancing plans for a massive high-rise hotel despite pushback from residents.
“I applaud the City Council for its unanimous approval of the Omni Hotel project, a major investment that will strengthen our economy, create jobs, and help drive continued growth in New Orleans," Mayor Helena Moreno said in a statement.
The vote created an overlay district in the CBD, allowing the council to modify building height restrictions and clearing a major hurdle in the project's approval process.
The Omni would be built across from the Convention Center and is expected to become the fifth-largest hotel in the city. It would also make history as the first one built in over 40 years with at least 1,000 rooms.
