Senators acquiring F Eklund from Sharks
The Ottawa Senators are acquiring winger William Eklund as well as forward prospects Kasper Halttunen and Brandon Svoboda from the San Jose Sharks for the ninth-overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
The Senators had acquired the ninth-overall selection on Sunday in the deal that sent captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers.
Eklund, 23, scored 15 goals with 53 points in 78 games last season with San Jose.
The seventh-overall pick by the Sharks in 2021, the Stockholm native has scored 50 goals with 163 points in 253 career NHL games.
Halttunen, 21, was drafted in the second round (36th overall) by the Sharks in 2023.
In 69 games with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda in 2025-26, he scored 16 goals with 35 points.

San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Mike Grier announced today that the club has acquired the ninth overall selection (Florida’s selection) in the 2026 NHL Draft from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for forwards William Eklund, Kasper Halttunen, and Brandon Svoboda.
The Sharks now own the second, ninth, and 27th overall selections in the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft.
Eklund, 23, ranked second on the team in assists (38), fourth in points (53), and seventh in goals (15), reaching the 30-assist and 50-point threshold for the second consecutive season. From Apr. 2-8, Eklund matched a career best four-game assist streak (two goals, four assists), appeared in his 200th game on Dec. 7 at Carolina Hurricanes, and reached the 100-point milestone with an assist on Feb. 28 vs the Edmonton Oilers.

The Ottawa Senators acquired forward William Eklund and two other players from the San Jose Sharks for the No. 9 pick in this week’s NHL Draft, the Sharks announced on Tuesday.
We’ve acquired the 9th overall selection from the Senators in exchange for forwards William Eklund, Kasper Halttunen, and Brandon Svoboda.
Eklund, a 23-year-old forward, spent parts of the last five seasons with the Sharks, scoring 15 goals and 53 points in 78 games last season and 50 goals and 163 points in 252 career games.
Haltunnen was drafted by the Sharks in the second round in 2023. The Finnish forward won the Memorial Cup with the London Knights last season. He also scored 16 goals and 35 points in 69 regular-season games with the Sharks’ AHL affiliate, the Barracuda, this past regular season.
