The rules have changed and more taxpayers are being pulled into the net, not only the wealthy
Less generous rules have turned capital gains tax into a âcash machineâ for the government, with income from the levy soaring by almost 80% to £24bn in the last tax year â equivalent to well over £800 a household.

Huge rise in HMRC tax income after allowance slashed to £3,000
The Treasury has enjoyed a bumper windfall from Capital Gains Tax after a series of tax changes dragged more investors into the net.
New HMRC figures show Capital Gains Tax (CGT) receipts hit almost £24.3 billion in the 2025/26 tax year, a staggering 77% increase on the previous year. Over the past decade, receipts have rocketed by 244%, underlining how the tax has become an increasingly lucrative source of revenue for the Government. Experts say the surge has been fuelled by the dramatic reduction in the annual CGT allowance, which has been cut from £12,300 in 2022/23 to just £3,000 today.
The allowance cut means investors can now make far smaller profits before facing a tax bill, while higher tax rates introduced in October 2024 have further boosted the Treasury's take.
