Penguins lose defenseman Sebastian Aho, who signs in Sweden
Defenseman Sebastian Aho, who spent the past two seasons under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins, has signed a two-year contract with the Växjö Lakers of the Swedish Hockey League.
Aho, a native of Sweden, remains under contract to the Penguins until July 1. With regards to his NHL status, he is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.
A left-handed shot, the 30-year-old Aho signed with the Penguins in 2024, agreeing to a contract with a salary cap hit of $775,000 but played only at the American Hockey League level with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Injuries limited Aho (5-foot-10, 180 pounds) to 56 games over his two seasons with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. This season, he appeared in 29 contests and scored 14 points (two goals, 14 assists).

Former New York Islanders defenseman Sebastian Aho has signed with the Växjö Lakers of the SHL, the team announced today. The deal ends his nine year term in North America, the last two of which were spent with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL.
Today’s news is not much of a surprise, as back in February the 30-year-old was expected to return home to Sweden with Växjö. Despite playing in 129 regular season games between his last two years on Long Island from 2022-24, Aho was unable to secure another NHL opportunity. Signing with Pittsburgh for league-minimum two years ago, he did not see another shot at the highest level.

Sebastian Aho: Signs with SHL team
Aho signed a two-year contract with Vaxjo Lakers HC of the SHL on Sunday.
Aho has played for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for the past two campaigns. In the 2025-26 regular season, he had two goals and 14 points in 29 appearances for Pittsburgh's top minor-league affiliate. Aho has 11 goals and 50 points in 190 career NHL regular-season outings.
