'Hit Man' Series Based On Movie Set At Netflix With Glen Powell – Exclusive

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix is looking to expand another one of its popular movie titles into series. Deadline has learned that the streamer is developing Hit Man, a series inspired by the 2024 AGC Studios feature that was co-written, produced and headlined by Glen Powell and co-written, directed and produced by Richard Linklater.

Powell and Linklater will executive produce the potential series, which is written by You’re the Worst creator Stephen Falk and produced by AGC Television and Powell’s BarnStorm Productions, sources said.

Falk, Linklater, Powell and BarnStorm’s Dan Cohen serve as executive producers alongside AGC’s Stuart Ford, Miguel A. Palos Jr and Lourdes Diaz. Co-executive producing are Steve Barnett, Alan Powell, Vicky Patel, Shivani Rawat and Julie Goldstein.

Glen Powell and Richard Linklater might bring Hit Man back as a TV show

Glen Powell and Richard Linklater’s 2023 comedy Hit Man already has a pretty hefty dose of episodic DNA built into its structure (at least, until its main plot kicks in about a third of the way into its running time). Based on a real guy named Gary Johnson, who spent several years working with Texas police to pose as a hired killer to catch people trying to hire hired killers, the film follows Powell—still in the early stages of his now-crippling “disguise acting” addiction—as he rotates through a series of personas in order to better get his clients/victims to open up. A big part of the early pleasures of the movie is the way the audience watches Powell chameleon his way through these encounters, telling and showing people exactly what they want to hear, the sort of thing that feels like it’d pretty easy to blow out into a more procedural structure.

Glen Powell's 95% RT-Rated Thriller Officially Getting a Netflix Spin-Off

Glen Powell has had a busy few years, to say the least. Thanks to his supporting role in 2022's Top Gun: Maverick, in which he came close to stealing scenes away from Tom Cruise, he continued an impressive theatrical run in titles like Twisters, Anyone But You, and The Running Man. His success isn't only up on the big screen, as he's set to return for a Season 2 of his hit Hulu series Chad Powers. A new report also confirms that one of his films is going to be pivoting into a streaming series.

Powell first collaborated with Richard Linklater on Everybody Wants Some!!, a spiritual sequel to the cult classic Dazed and Confused. In 2023, the pair reunited for the movie Hit Man, in which Powell starred as a mild-mannered civilian who would sport disguises in sting operations to catch people who were attempting to hire genuine assassins. Deadline has confirmed that Hit Man is being developed as a TV series at Netflix, with both Powell and Linklater set to serve as producers.
