I-290 drivers stuck in miles-long backup as bomb squad investigates ‘incident'; expressway closed
Bomb squad technicians could be seen surrounding a vehicle on the Eisenhower Expressway as the roadway was shut down in both directions in the western suburbs of Chicago, snarling traffic.
Traffic was backed up for miles on the busy Eisenhower Expressway in the western suburbs Thursday afternoon as police and bomb technicians worked to investigate an "active incident" involving a vehicle, with portions of the roadway completely cleared and "extended" backups expected.
According to the Illinois State Police, the incident began about 10:05 a.m. in Westchester on I-290 westbound near Mannheim, with ISP requesting assistance from multiple local agencies.
Sky5 reporter Mike Lorber said ISP called the incident an "explosion" multiple times in their dispatches.

WESTCHESTER, Ill. (WLS) — An investigation has shut down lanes on Interstate 290 Thursday morning in Chicago's west suburbs.
The investigation has blocked lanes in both directions between 25th Avenue and Wolf Road.
Chopper 7 flew above the scene as an SUV in a middle lane sat with its windows blown out. A bomb squad unit from the Cook County Sheriff's Office appeared to investigate the SUV.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has also responded to the scene. The incident started at around 10 a.m. Further details on what led up to the investigation were not immediately available.
