Vegas coach has ‘pinched myself’ during run after taking over team toward end of regular season
LAS VEGAS — John Tortorella is concerned that rest might lead to rust for the Vegas Golden Knights.
On Friday, the coach’s source of fretfulness was the fact that it had already been three days since the Golden Knights eliminated the Colorado Avalanche in four games in the Western Conference Final on Tuesday. After giving the players the next two days off, he wonders if his team might be stale heading into the Stanley Cup Final next week.
“Just that, the layoff … it’s a lot of days, and I'll tell you right now, it worries the crap out of me,” Tortorella said.

There have been many times when Tortorella-coached teams weren’t given much of a chance against a supposedly far-superior opponent. That was never more true than in the 2019 post-season, when Tortorella’s Columbus Blue Jackets faced the juggernaut Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round.
It was supposed to be Tampa’s time. The Lightning won the Presidents’ Trophy with 128 points and a plus-103 goal differential. They were in a class of their own, but the Blue Jackets didn’t just beat them; they dismantled the Lightning. Columbus took Tampa’s best punch and didn’t flinch, won a pair of blowout games and swept them out of the playoffs.

LAS VEGAS – From the moment John Tortorella walked into the building, he could see the Vegas Golden Knights’ potential.
It was late March, and Vegas had just relieved Bruce Cassidy of his duties, less than three years after he coached the team to a Stanley Cup championship. The Golden Knights had lost nine of their last 12 games to fall dangerously close to the playoff cut line, and they turned to Tortorella with only eight games remaining in the regular season.
