Judge halts Trump ‘anti-weaponization’ fund after Jan. 6 prosecutor files suit
A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund,” created as part of an unprecedented settlement with the president, his family and the Trump Org.
U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema of the Eastern District of Virginia entered the order on Friday after a Jan. 6 prosecutor and others sued to block the fund last week.
The fund is being operated out of the Justice Department, which didn’t immediately comment on the order.
Both Democrats and Republicans have criticized the fund. Opponents have labeled it a massive “slush fund” for Trump’s allies. Its existence has alarmed some legal experts, in part because there will be very little public oversight over how it is managed. Senate Republican leaders last week punted a vote on a GOP package to fund ICE and the Border Patrol until June in part because of concerns over the fund, NBC News reported.

A federal judge in Virginia has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from moving ahead with plans to create a nearly $1.8 billion fund to compensate people who it says were wrongly targeted by the government in the past.
The brief order from US District Judge Leonie Brinkema says the administration cannot take any action âpursuant to the creation or operation of the Anti-Weaponization Fund, which includes the transferring of money to the Fund; the consideration of any claims submitted to the Fund; and the disbursing of any funds from the Fund.â
She set a hearing for June 12 to hear arguments over whether she should issue a more lasting pause on the governmentâs efforts to set up the fund, which is being challenged by a diverse coalition of critics and entities who say theyâve been targeted by the Trump administration and are ineligible to receive money from it.

A federal judge in Virginia on Friday temporarily blocked the Department of Justice from taking any further action to create or disburse money from its so-called Anti-Weaponization Fund as one of three lawsuits challenging it proceeds.
Judge Leonie Brinkema said she would hold a hearing on June 12 in U.S. District Court in Alexandria on whether to maintain the injunction against the DOJ's $1.8 billion fund.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche earlier this month said he was creating that fund as part of a settlement of a $10 billion lawsuit by President Donald Trump against the Internal Revenue Service for the leak of his tax records by an IRS employee. Blanche is Trump's former criminal defense lawyer.
