Chicago man, 22, charged in connection with shooting of Indiana deputy inside ER
A northwest Indiana deputy was shot at a hospital after helping a man he thought was a stranded motorist, police say.
A 22-year-old man from Chicago is facing several charges, including attempted murder, in connection with the shooting of an Indiana deputy inside a hospital emergency room on Friday, authorities announced.
Authorities approved attempted murder, battery against a public safety official and auto theft charges against Sharod L. Grafton on Saturday.
The announcement comes one day after LaPorte County Sheriff’s Deputy Jon Samuelson was shot inside the emergency room at Franciscan Health Michigan City.
Samuelson, a 12-year veteran of the sheriff's office and a K-9 handler for the department, was allegedly shot by Grafton after he transported him to the hospital for medical attention under the impression Grafton was a stranded motorist. At the hospital, Samuelson learned that the man "may have been involved in an earlier criminal incident," authorities said at a press conference after the shooting.

South Bend Police organizes online meal train in support of family of Deputy Samuelson
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – The South Bend Police Department’s Peer Support Team organizes an online meal train, in support of the family of LaPorte County Deputy Samuelson.
The team is calling on the community to rally together, looking for volunteers to sign up for meal deliveries in support of the family, during this challenging time.
From the meal train website: “While our brother in blue is fighting hard on the road to recovery, we are asking the community to step in to care for the people who have always cared for him—his family. During a crisis, the last thing a family should have to worry about is “what’s for dinner?” We want to ensure they can focus 100% of their energy on healing, comfort, and being there for one another.”
