Boil water advisory issued for downtown Atlanta after power failure at water plant
ATLANTA — The city of Atlanta's Department of Watershed Management has issued a boil water advisory for parts of downtown after an internal power failure at the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant.
The advisory was issued out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with Georgia Environmental Protection Division guidance for public notice, officials said. It remains in effect while the department monitors operations and water pressure and waits to complete sampling protocols before it can be lifted.
Residents and property owners who experienced water outages or low water pressure are advised to boil all water before using it for drinking, cooking, preparing baby food or brushing teeth. Officials said the water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute.

ATLANTA – The City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management (DWM) has issued a boil water advisory for residents and businesses in the city, specifically affecting the downtown corridor.
The immediate boil water advisory was prompted by an internal power failure at the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant on May 22, 2026. According to city officials, the advisory was established out of an abundance of caution and following public notice guidance from the Georgia EPD. DWM officials stated they are actively monitoring operations and system pressures across the affected area.
To protect the public from potential health hazards, anyone in the impacted area who has experienced low water pressure or complete water outages should boil their water prior to use or use bottled water instead.
