Cole to make season debut for Yankees Friday vs. MLB-best Rays
NEW YORK – Gerrit Cole's season debut is in sight. The right-hander will be activated and start for the Yankees when they face the Rays in the Bronx on Friday night, appearing in a big league game for the first time since 2024 as he completes his rehab from March 2025 Tommy John surgery.
After Cole touched 99.6 mph in his most recent Minor League rehab start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said it was “on the table” to activate the 2023 American League Cy Young Award winner during this homestand at Yankee Stadium.
As recently as Sunday, Boone said the plan was to have rookie Elmer Rodríguez make another turn in the rotation. But Rodríguez was optioned to Triple-A on Monday, a move that accompanied signing right-handed reliever Yovanny Cruz to a Major League contract and adding him to the active roster.

That most recent rehab start was incredibly promising, as I wrote in Monday's newsletter. And, with the rather immediate success of some other high-profile veteran pitchers returning from injuries like Shane McClanahan and Zack Wheeler, we should expect Cole to hit the ground running and immediately pitch like an ace, right?
