Kylie to The Boroughs: the seven best shows to stream this week

After 40 years of stardom, the cult of Kylie comes to our screens in a Beckham-style Netflix show, while the Duffer brothers bring us Stranger Things set in a spooky care home. Plus: new Bluey!

When I Should Be So Lucky reached No 1 in 1988, the idea that Kylie Minogue would still be a cultural icon four decades later would have seemed ridiculous. Yet here we still are: the cult of Kylie has taken many twists and turns, some of them tragic, but she shows no sign of slowing down. This three-part documentary comes from the makers of Beckham and is very much an authorised version of the story. This is a mixed blessing but it does mean that Kylie herself is front and centre and able to tell her own story. Other contributors include her sister Dannii, Jason Donovan and Nick Cave. Netflix, from Wednesday 20 May

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed: Tatiana Maslany and Murray Bartlett make this pleasurable TV indeed

Apple’s superbly twisty thriller about a beautiful camboy blackmailing a divorced mum is like the new No Country for Old Men – with added Nick from New Girl

I was drawn to this week’s show for the worst reason. That name is pure critic bait, and I like my fruit low-hanging. Other famously pre-roasted works include the films The Happening and Fantastic Four, and the Oasis album Be Here Now. (No, thanks.) In my schadenfreude-soaked soul, I wondered if Apple’s show might join them. Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed (Apple TV, from Wed)? Do I need the warranty?

It stars Tatiana Maslany, who also led the brilliantly titled, if widely slated, show She Hulk: Attorney at Law. No one doubts Maslany’s chops. She won an Emmy playing 17 distinct clones in the sci-fi series Orphan Black. Here she plays Paula, a divorced mother going through a custody battle. Paula’s only access to intimacy is with a young online sex worker named Trevor. Despite his name, Trevor is beautiful, like Jeff Buckley. I suppose Jeff isn’t the most exotic name either.

A camboy scam, murder and custody fight: Inside ‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’

Tatiana Maslany and video calls don’t have the best track record these days.

In the opening moments of the new Apple TV series “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed,” her character Paula, a recently divorced mom with a mysterious past trying to keep her life together, is in the middle of a late-night venting session on her laptop with a camboy when things descend into chaos. The ease in which he toggles between listening to her problems and offering her cyber pleasure, it turns out, is all part of a ruse to scam her out of money with a kidnapping she witnesses unfold on camera and a subsequent ransom. But the plan gets thwarted when said camboy is murdered in the process, setting Paula off into a spiral to uncover what happened and clear her name. Adding to her emotional chaos is a fed up ex-husband named Karl, played by Jake Johnson, and the custody battle he’s exacerbated with his decision to move from Brooklyn to Boise, Idaho.
