DENVER — Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) commuted the sentence of Tina Peters on Friday afternoon.
The former Republican Mesa County Clerk was serving a nearly nine-year sentence for her role in allowing unauthorized access to her county's election equipment in an attempt to uncover election fraud.
Polis commuted her sentence to four-and-a-half years and said she would be eligible for parole next month. Before Polis' commutation, Peters' earliest parole date would have been March 2028.
Peters has been at La Vista Correctional Facility since April 16, 2025. She served six months in Mesa County jail before that. She has served about 17 months so far.
Election denier Tina Peters will get clemency after admitting she ‘made a mistake’
Tina Peters, the Republican former election clerk imprisoned for crimes related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election, will receive clemency from Coloradoâs Democratic Gov. Jared Polis and soon be released from custody, Polis exclusively told CNN.
The decision followed a previously unreleased statement in Petersâ clemency application, obtained by CNN from Polisâ office, in which Peters acknowledged for the first time since her 2024 conviction that she âmade a mistakeâ and âmisledâ Colorado election officials.
Polis said in an interview Friday that he was cutting Petersâ prison sentence in half, reducing it to 4.5 years. He said that meant she could be paroled within a month, based on the time she has already served behind bars and Coloradoâs early-release rules.
