Dangerous arsenic levels detected in Thailand’s Mekong mainstream for first time
BANGKOK — Thai authorities have found what they described as dangerous levels of arsenic contamination in sediment from the Mekong River and three of its tributaries in the northern provinces of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.
Heavy metal pollution has been reported from key tributaries of the Mekong for more than a year now, but the tests conducted in March by Thailand’s Pollution Control Department mark the first time that arsenic contamination has been detected on the mainstream of the Mekong, a vital transboundary river that supports thousands of plant and wildlife species and the livelihoods of millions of people.
Opposition zeroes in on cross-border pollution
Opposition MPs have called on the government to treat cross-border pollution as a national priority, warning that toxic contamination in northern rivers is threatening public health, ecosystems and local economies.
During a House session yesterday, Chiang Rai MP Monthicha Chaibal from the opposition Klatham Party questioned Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin over contamination detected in the Kok, Sai and Mekong rivers in the North, which authorities suspect is linked to mining activities in neighbouring Myanmar.
Ms Monthicha said flooding in Chiang Rai in September 2024 and March 2025 was followed by the discovery of arsenic and heavy metal contamination in water and soil samples.

Snails in the Salween River Found to Contain Arsenic Levels 20 Times Above Safety Standards

Snails in the Salween River, which flows through both Myanmar and Thailand, have been found to contain arsenic levels dangerous to human health at concentrations 10 to 20 times higher than safety standards, according to a report by the Thai news outlet The Transborder News.
The report cited comments made on May 3 by Somporn Pengkham, who leads a research project aimed at improving environmental health awareness through the “Citizen Science” approach. Due to these findings, Thai authorities have warned residents living near the Salween River in Mae Hong Son Province not to consume snails collected from the river.
