Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton engaged in a thrilling contest for P6 in the Miami Sprint.
Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton got stuck into an exhilarating battle for P6 in the Sprint at the Miami Grand Prix, but were both left with more questions than answers as car issues impacted their respective running.
The Red Bull driver started the Sprint in P5 with Hamilton close behind in seventh before they nearly came together on the opening lap, going three-wide with Alpine’s Franco Colapinto in a tense moment.
“Why is he not taking it?”: Hamilton was reluctant to re-pass Verstappen
Max Verstappen was frustrated when Lewis Hamilton appeared unwilling to re-pass him when the Red Bull driver slowed during the sprint race.
“Max overtook me going off-track,” Hamilton advised his team. Verstappen’s race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase also doubted the pass legitimate, telling his driver: “It’s best you give the position back to Hamilton.”
Verstappen duly slowed on the straight approaching turn 17. But Hamilton appeared unwilling to pass his rival, holding back.
“Why is he not taking it? Fuck’s sake,” exclaimed Verstappen. Hamilton clearly slowed down significantly as the Mercedes pair began to pull away from them.
Hamilton eventually passed Verstappen as they came out of turn 17. Had he passed prior to the corner, Verstappen might have had a strong chance to pass him into turn one.

Max Verstappen has accused Lewis Hamilton of “wasting our time” during the Miami sprint race following a bizarre exchange of positions.
On lap eight, Verstappen overtook Hamilton for sixth place but did so by running off the circuit.
After being instructed to hand the position back to the Ferrari driver, Verstappen did not defend into the final corner and deliberately ran deep to allow Hamilton through.
