Dallas Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith’s son didn’t hear his name called in the first three days of the NFL Draft, but managed to end Sunday on an NFL team after all.
E.J. Smith, a running back who played with the Texas A&M Aggies and Stanford Cardinal, reportedly signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent.

Texas A&M running back E.J. Smith participated in Dallas Day, the Cowboys’ annual workout day for local prospects. That gave Cowboys fans hope that Smith might sign with the hometown team and follow in the footsteps of his father.
But as he did in choosing his college, E.J. Smith is his own man.
After going undrafted, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, the NFL’s all-time leading rusher, is signing with the Chiefs.

Chiefs Sign Son of Legendary NFL RB in Moves After NFL Draft
The Kansas City Chiefs addressed their backfield early in free agency, then added a promising player with a strong NFL bloodline in one of their first moves after the NFL draft.
The Chiefs made several signings shortly after the draft ended, adding undrafted free agents to address needs on both sides of the ball. That included a running back whose father was one of the best in NFL history.
As NFL reporter Joseph Hoyt noted, the Chiefs added to their backfield by signing the son of Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith.
“Texas A&M RB E.J. Smith, the son of Hall of Fame RB Emmitt Smith, is signing with the Kansas City Chiefs as an UDFA, per source,” Hoyt shared in a post on X.
