Former Alabama football coach Nick Saban involved in Predators’ GM interviews, per report

As the Nashville Predators continue their search for a new general manager, they may be getting some help from former Alabama football coach Nick Saban.

According to a report from Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Saban has been assisting majority owner Bill Haslam during recent in-person interviews.

"I believe that in this round of in person (interviews), Nick Saban’s played a pretty big role," Friedman said during an April 17 episode of "32 Thoughts: The Podcast." "I think he’s asking questions, I think he’s sizing up the candidates."

A representative for the Predators told The Tennessean on April 18 that they would not release any details on their GM search, including potential candidates or where they are in the process.

NHL Rumors: Allvin Out, Maple Leafs Interview 2 New Names, and a Missed Toronto Trade

In today’s NHL rumors rundown, the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to conduct their search for a President of Hockey Ops and/or a general manager, and interviews are underway. Meanwhile, the Vancouver Canucks have reportedly made a major leadership change by parting ways with GM Patrik Allvin.

Could the Maple Leafs be linked to former legend and franchise icon Mats Sundin? Meanwhile, questions are emerging about past trade pursuits, including missed opportunities that may have shaped Toronto’s disappointing campaign.

The Maple Leafs are being closely watched as the playoffs begin this weekend. Not only are they on the hunt for management, but there is talk of meaningful roster upgrades the team will make this summer and tried to make during the 2025-26 season.

Predators Have Interviewed Ryan Martin For GM Vacancy

There are currently three open GM positions around the NHL: Toronto, Vancouver, and Nashville.  The first two have only been known briefly, while the other has been known since early February, when Barry Trotz announced that he’d be stepping down from the role.

While the Predators have had ample time to conduct the search so far, they’re still in the interview process as more potential candidates start to be made available with the regular season now over.  One of those candidates is Rangers assistant GM Ryan Martin, as Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports in the latest 32 Thoughts podcast (audio link) that Martin has interviewed for Nashville’s opening.
