Cubs put closer Daniel Palencia on IL with oblique strain

CHICAGO — Cubs closer Daniel Palencia has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain, the team announced Friday.

Palencia, 26, was off to a good start to his season after helping Venezuela to the WBC championship last month. He had one save in five games without giving up a run before getting injured. He joins setup men Phil Maton (knee) and Hunter Harvey (triceps) on the injured list as the Cubs are dealing with a rash of injuries on the mound.

Palencia first felt an issue with his lower back on Wednesday in Philadelphia but got through a bullpen session Friday morning before experiencing soreness during conditioning afterwards.

Horton undergoes right elbow surgery, to miss 15-16 months

CHICAGO — The Cubs already understood that budding ace Cade Horton was going to be sidelined the rest of this season due to an elbow injury. Both the ballclub and the pitcher now have more clarity about the road ahead.

On Friday, Cubs manager Craig Counsell announced that Horton underwent a revision repair of the ulnar collateral ligament with an internal brace on Thursday. Counsell said the procedure, which was performed by Dr. Keith Meister, comes with an estimated recovery timeline of around 15-16 months.

Counsell said Horton already had a good frame of mind about the coming months.

“When something like this happens,” Counsell said, “the only thing you can do is kind of worry about what’s next. If you put your head on some big timeframe, that’s not very helpful. So, Cade talked about just kind of worry about today and make today the best you can, and just keep doing that.

CHICAGO — The Cubs were dealt another critical blow to their bullpen Friday, when they placed closer Daniel Palencia on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to April 14) with a left oblique strain.

Palencia is the third key piece of Chicago’s relief corps to hit the shelf in the last week.

“It was Wedensday,” Palencia responded when asked when he first felt the pain. “I was playing catch. I felt something weird there.”

A corresponding move will be made prior to Saturday’s game.
