Carlos Alcaraz withdraws from Barcelona Open due to wrist
BARCELONA, Spain — Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the Barcelona Open after undergoing a test on his right wrist, the tournament announced Wednesday.
The withdrawal means the second-ranked Alcaraz cannot overtake top-ranked Jannik Sinner and move back atop the rankings next week.
The move came a day after Alcaraz called for a trainer and had his wrist treated during his opening match, a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Otto Virtanen.
Alcaraz was slated to play Tomas Machac in the round of 16 on Thursday.
The 22-year-old Spaniard lost the No. 1 ranking after Sinner beat him in the Monte Carlo Masters final on Sunday.

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz has pulled out of the Barcelona Open with a wrist injury.
The 22-year-old Spaniard beat Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen in straight sets in his first-round match on Tuesday but suffered from discomfort during the contest.
Alcaraz had been due to play Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic on Thursday but following medical tests on his right wrist has withdrawn from the tournament.
"I felt my wrist give out on a return during the match. After the tests, we saw that it's a more serious injury than any of us expected, and I have to listen to my body so it doesn't affect me in the future," said Alcaraz, who was replaced as world number one by Jannik Sinner earlier this week.

Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Barcelona Open with an injury to his right wrist and forearm, sustained during his first-round win over Finland’s Otto Virtanen.
Alcaraz, who beat Virtanen 6-4, 6-2 and was set to face Tomáš Macháč of the Czech Republic in the second round, called a news conference early Wednesday evening in Barcelona to announce that he could not continue in this year’s edition of the tournament, which he has won twice.
“After seeing the results today, it turns out the injury is a little more serious than we all expected. I need to listen to my body and do what’s best for me, so it doesn’t affect me in the future,” the 22-year-old seven-time Grand Slam champion said.
