Husband of missing American woman in the Bahamas leaves country, lawyer says

The husband of a Michigan woman who was reportedly swept out to sea in the Bahamas has left the country, his lawyer told NBC News.

Brian Hooker left "because his mom is very ill," but he plans on returning to the islands, attorney Terrel Butler said Wednesday.

His attorney said Brian Hooker left on a commercial flight but would not disclose his destination.

Officials are still searching for Brian Hooker's wife, Lynette Hooker, after she vanished on the evening of April 4. He told police that she fell off their dinghy into the water while they were traveling from Hope Town to Elbow Cay, according to police.

Michigan Man Is Released in Wife’s Disappearance in the Bahamas

Brian Hooker had been in police custody since April 8 after he said his wife fell off their boat and was swept away by strong currents.

An American man who told the police in the Bahamas last week that his wife disappeared after falling off the small boat they had been traveling on has been released from custody.

The release was announced by the Royal Bahamas Police Force in a statement posted on social media.

“The decision to release the individual was made following consultation with the Department of Public Prosecutions, which recommended that no charges be filed at this time pending the outcome of further investigations.”
