Director’s Take: Small Steps, Big Leaps

Hey, everyone! Alec here, checking in as we wrap up this wild season. It’s been an absolute privilege watching you experience The Reign of Talon and pick up our newest Heroes. Whether you’ve just joined (or re-joined!) the Overwatch community or you’ve been here since day one, we can’t thank you enough for coming on this journey and believing in our vision for Overwatch.

Looking ahead to Season 2, the Overwatch team and I would like to use this space to give you an inside perspective of how we tackle pain points within the game. When we spot problems or have big dreams for features, we work on short-term and long-term goals to turn our visions into a viable reality. Here’s what that looks like for several ambitious undertakings we’re focused on in 2026.

Mercy and other Overwatch old-timers are getting spruced up in season 2

Mercy, Reaper, and some of Overwatch's older heroes have had it tough in the game's newer meta, but Blizzard is looking to change that by giving them new abilities that used to be tied to perks. Alec Dawson, Overwatch associate game director, posted a blog previewing some of those changes on Friday, and the first round of changes will show up when season 2 goes live on April 14.

Mercy's flash-heal perk, which lets her add a burst of instant healing, will be part of her permanent kit once the season starts. Reaper gets the benefit of his long-distance volley all the time, and Pharah's drift boosters perk will always be active, so she can move around while casting her ult. Roadhog, Lifeweaver, and Sombra are up for reworks later, though Dawson didn't have any details to share about how their kits might change.

Overwatch Confirms Reworks for Sombra, Lifeweaver, and Roadhog

Overwatch just confirmed several heroes will be reworked this year, with Sombra, Lifeweaver, and Roadhog being the first ones on the docket. This is part of a long-term project by Overwatch to keep character kits dynamic and flexible, but not overly complicated or niche.

The year 2026 has been huge for Overwatch so far. It dropped the “2” from its title, introduced five new heroes with a sixth on the way, began its first year-long storyline, and refreshed its UI, breaking Steam player count records in the process. Throughout recent interviews and streams, Overwatch has hinted that several heroes might receive reworks at some point this year.
