Sources: Kings' late foul was tactical error, not tanking
SACRAMENTO — The NBA on Wednesday is looking into what Sacramento Kings sources say was a strategy mistake by coach Doug Christie — and not intentional tanking tactics — late in Tuesday's loss to the Golden State Warriors.
With the Kings leading by one with 3:15 remaining in the game, Christie called for forward Doug McDermott to foul Seth Curry, despite being in the penalty.
The strategy was just a misstep, sources told ESPN, as Christie wanted to use a timeout before he automatically lost it when the clock ticked below three minutes. Sources said Christie miscalculated that the Warriors were in the bonus and it would send Curry, an 86.4% career free throw shooter, to the line, despite more appealing options on the floor to foul if opting to hack a player.

The NBA cleared Doug Christie of tanking accusations levied at the Sacramento Kings coach after he instructed his team to intentionally foul Seth Curry in the fourth quarter of the Kings’ loss to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night.
The coaching decision — in which Christie directed Kings guard Doug McDermott to foul Curry with 3:15 left and put the Warriors guard on the line for two free throws as a result — sparked a social media firestorm in which the Kings were accused, by fans and media members alike, of blatantly tanking. The Warriors’ Draymond Green escalated the situation after the Warriors’ 110-105 win when he criticized Christie’s move and claimed it was further proof of the NBA’s tanking dilemma. The league, in turn, launched an investigation into the matter.

Sacramento Kings cleared in intentional foul investigation
The league's investigation determined Kings made no intentional effort to give Warriors a shooting foul or lose the April 7 game.
NEW YORK – The NBA issued the following statement today regarding the Sacramento Kings investigation.
“The NBA has completed its investigation of the Sacramento Kings and Head Coach Doug Christie’s decision to foul intentionally late in the team’s game against the Golden State Warriors on April 7. The league’s investigation determined that Christie mistakenly believed that the Warriors were not in the penalty and therefore instructed his team to foul in an attempt to stop the clock and utilize one of the team’s remaining timeouts. The investigation found that Christie made no intentional effort to give the Warriors a shooting foul, or to cause the Kings to lose the game.”
