First Look From Inside Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Ride Testing at Magic Kingdom
Walt Disney World President Jeff Vahle shared photos from testing of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom, which reopens next month
Vahle’s photos offer our first look inside the attraction after an over year-long closure, although don’t reveal much. The new trains are similar to the old ones but with refreshed color schemes. The ride’s entire track was also replaced but is expected to be the same layout as the old.
Rockwork was torn down, reconstructed, and repainted throughout the attraction. Inside will be an updated opening scene with a transformation of the Rainbow Caverns. There will be refreshed Audio-Animatronics, new gold props, and more.
Disney World President Jeff Vahle Takes Test Ride on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Ahead of May 3 Reopening
Walt Disney World President Jeff Vahle took a test ride on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad today along with Magic Kingdom Vice President Sarah Riles and Imagineer Wyatt Winter.
The test ride comes ahead of the attraction's May 3, 2026 reopening at Magic Kingdom.
Vahle shared his excitement about the refurbished attraction following the test ride.
"Exciting news! Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopens on May 3 with a lower height requirement – Guests 38 inches and taller will be able to ride, so even more families will enjoy this classic adventure together," Vahle said. "That's in addition to new show elements and ride vehicles. Congrats to the project team for bringing new magic to the wildest ride in the wilderness, and making it available to even more of our Guests!"
