COLUMBUS, Ohio — A member of the family behind the Schmidt’s Sausage Haus brand died in a fire at his family’s Upper Arlington home early Easter morning.
Matt Schmidt, 43, was a fifth-generation Schmidt family member and served as brand ambassador for his family’s company.
His wife and three daughters made it out of the home safely when it caught fire around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Matt was sleeping in a four-season room in the back of the home, where the fire originated, according to a preliminary report from the Upper Arlington Division of Fire, which is investigating the tragedy as accidental.

Fifth-generation Schmidt’s leader Matt Schmidt dies in Easter morning house fire
UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio (WSYX) — The Central Ohio community is mourning Matt Schmidt, a fifth-generation member of the family behind Schmidt’s Sausage Haus, who died in a house fire early Easter Sunday.
Fire officials say the blaze broke out just after 4:30 a.m. at Schmidt’s home on Chevington Road. Investigators said they believe the fire started in a sunroom at the back of the house, where Schmidt was sleeping at the time.
"Crews were on scene within four minutes," Asst. Fire Chief Michael Bell said. "They found very heavy smoke and flames at the rear of the building."
Schmidt’s wife and three young daughters escaped safely before emergency crews arrived. About 50 first responders were at the scene just minutes later.
