Cade Horton To Undergo Season-Ending UCL Surgery
Cubs right-hander Cade Horton will undergo elbow surgery and miss the remainder of the 2026 season, manager Craig Counsell tells Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic. Per Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune, Horton has a torn ulnar collateral ligament. Whether he requires full Tommy John surgery or some sort of alternative won’t be known until the procedure is taking place. He is already on the 15-day injured list and will be transferred to the 60-day IL whenever the Cubs need to open a 40-man roster spot.
It’s a painful but unsurprising development for Horton. He started for the Cubs on Friday but threw a pitch that was about two miles per hour below his average. He summoned the trainer and was removed from the game, with the Cubs announcing his ailment as forearm discomfort. He was quickly placed on the IL and is now destined to stay there.

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Cade Horton will have season-ending surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, manager Craig Counsell said Tuesday.
Horton, 24, was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with what the team called a strained forearm. He left in the second inning of Friday's game in Cleveland after he felt discomfort while throwing a 93.8 mph fastball — slower than normal.
Horton, who went 11-4 with a 2.67 ERA as a rookie last season, returned to Chicago to see team doctors on Monday. He was 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA and 4 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings over his two starts this season.

CLEVELAND — Riley Martin had a day to let the moment sink in. When the Cubs’ had their game against the Guardians rained out on Saturday, the rookie reliever was able to go through a workout at Progressive Field without the immediate stress of a Major League debut.
“I stepped into the stadium, and I just looked up,” Martin said. “It was like, ‘Man, this is a lot different than Iowa.’”
The Cubs officially promoted Martin from Triple-A Iowa on Sunday ahead of the team’s doubleheader against the Guardians. The move came after the North Siders placed starter Cade Horton on the 15-day injured list due to a right forearm strain. Martin joined the bullpen as an arm capable of covering multiple innings, if needed.
