On April 9, we’re joining newsrooms across the country for Local News Day. While the national media remains obsessed with the latest outrage cycle in D.C., we’re keeping our eyes on the Hwy 49 corridor, the river, and the halls of government in Nevada County.
This isn’t just about a date on the calendar. “Local news” isn’t a marketing buzzword; it’s the difference between knowing which way the wind is blowing during peak fire season and being left in the dark.
It’s easy to get sucked into the national food fight happening on social media. Keyboard warriors, pundits and now AI abound. But, we’ve found that local news is an antidote to polarization.
Local News Day: Wilmington, New Hanover County to issue April 9 proclamation
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – For the first time ever, local newsrooms will be honored with their very own day. Local News Day will be celebrated April 9.
The inaugural national recognition was created to celebrate, support and strengthen local journalism.
The idea started with a group of journalists and media outlets, including Montana Free Press, American Journalism Project and Press Forward, to help emphasize the importance of local news.
On Monday, April 6, New Hanover County Commission Chair LeAnn Pierce will proclaim April 9 as Local News Day at the start of the commissioners’ meeting.
“Local journalism is how our residents stay connected to what’s happening in their community,” said Pierce. “New Hanover County values the reporters who show up every day to cover the issues that matter most, and we’re glad to join in recognizing their work on Local News Day.”
