Fanatics takes over exclusive NFL trading card license
Fanatics, under the Topps brand, will produce fully licensed NFL cards for the first time since 2016 and is instituting its debut and award-winner patch program, the company announced Thursday.
Topps will include one-of-one-numbered Rookie PREM1ERE Patch Autograph cards and NFL Honors Gold Shield Autograph cards, featuring gold NFL shields taken from the jerseys of 2024 Associated Press award winners (MVP, Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, and Rookie of the Year) worn during the 2025 season. It is a continuation of a program already used for MLB and NBA cards.
Fanatics is kicking off its 20-year deal with the release of 2025 Topps Chrome Football on April 15, after signing an agreement with the NFL Players Association that began in 2023.

The NFL is coming back to Topps as both the league and the iconic company look to capitalize on the trading card boom.
The league, Topps’ owner Fanatics Collectibles and the NFL Players Association announced on Thursday that the league is once again making Topps its exclusive trading card licensee. It’s the first time since 2016 that Topps will be designing and developing trading cards for the NFL, serving as a major win for a company that has long been one of the top names in the trading card industry.
“I feel like we’ve been getting ready for this moment for four years now, and it’s finally here, and it’s really exciting,†Fanatics Collectibles CEO Mike Mahan told CNN Sports. “It’s the culmination of a lot of hard work, and we feel very enthusiastic about the products we have coming and how it’s going to be received by collectors and fans. And so that’s very gratifying.â€

The last time Topps printed a licensed NFL card, Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota headlined the set’s rookie class and the sports card world stood years away from an unexpected boom in popularity.
After more than a decade, Topps will kick off its return to producing NFL licensed trading cards (meaning cards with team names and logos) as the long-term deal between parent company Fanatics Collectibles and the league takes effect with 2025 Topps Chrome Football, a staple brand within the company’s portfolio. The set will be released on April 15 with a pre-order window set to commence Friday.
