Republic of Ireland make three changes for North Macedonia friendly

Heimir Hallgrimsson has made three changes to his Republic of Ireland side for tonight's Aviva Stadium friendly against North Macedonia.

The Boys in Green manager had signalled that he would not make wholesale changes to the team which agonisingly lost on penalties to Czechia in their World Cup play-off semi-final in Prague last week, and stuck to his word with minimial alterations.

Ryan Manning, whose foul for a penalty allowed the Czechs to halve the first-half deficit at the Fortuna Arena, is replaced in the XI by Liam Scales, who has returned from suspension.

Meanwhile, John Egan also comes into the back five in place of Jake O'Brien.

Republic of Ireland v North Macedonia: Pain of Prague will be laid bare by empty seats at ‘sold-out’ Aviva

After the sugar rush of Prague, 10 more international matches in 2026 will test the rekindled interest in the Republic of Ireland men’s team.

It starts on Tuesday night against North Macedonia, a nation that visits on a comparably low ebb, having been trounced 4-0 by Denmark last Thursday in their own World Cup playoff semi-final.

There is plenty of misery to go round. And plenty of tickets are available for an occasion that sold out in minutes last year. That sellout was driven by hopes that a place at the World Cup would be on the line. Defeat in Prague last Thursday put paid to that.
