BRUSSELS — A group of European Parliament lawmakers is pressing the European Commission to look into FIFA's ticket-selling tactics for the World Cup, amid concerns these could violate EU competition and consumer protection rules.
The group of 23 lawmakers, mainly from the center-left of the Parliament, warn that FIFA, "as the exclusive primary seller of World Cup tickets … may hold a dominant position in the downstream ticket sales market."
The lawmakers ask the Commission whether it sees the practices as a "potential abuse of a dominant position" and if consumers can make an informed purchasing decision, as they "may be deprived of essential information," according to a set of written questions seen by POLITICO.
