‘The Mummy’: John Hannah Returning as Rachel Weisz’s Brother (Exclusive)
'Ready or Not' filmmakers Radio Silence are are helming the Universal feature.
John Hannah, who appeared in the previous Mummy movies made at the turn of the century, is reuniting with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz for the latest installment of the horror-adventure franchise.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of film collective Radio Silence, who together revitalized the Scream franchise with 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI and are behind the Ready or Not films, are helming the feature, which has a script by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan, Orphan: First Kill).
Plot details are being kept in the sarcophagus at this stage. The original movie, released in 1999, starred Fraser as treasure hunter who travels to Egypt in the 1920s with a spunky librarian, played by Weisz, only to accidentally awaken a supernaturally powerful high priest.
John Hannah reuniting with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz for fourth film in “The Mummy” franchise
The Mummy is reviving a beloved character for its next installment.
John Hannah, who portrayed Jonathan Carnahan, the bumbling brother of Rachel Weisz’s Evelyn in the trilogy, will return for the 2028 film, confirms Universal Pictures.
Academy Award winners Brendan Fraser and Weisz will also reprise their roles in the upcoming fourth movie.
Fraser, like Hannah, appeared in all three Mummy films as Rick O’Connell, an American treasure hunter who relies on the Ancient Egypt expertise of librarian Evelyn, played by Weisz in the first two films (she was replaced by Mario Bello in 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor).

‘The Mummy’ Reboot Bringing Back John Hannah as Rachel Weisz’s Brother
Just when he thought he was out…they pull him back into the crypt.
John Hannah, who played an erudite thief in 1999’s “The Mummy” and its two sequels, will return to the scene of the tomb raiding in the upcoming franchise reboot. He joins Brendan Fraser, who played a daring adventurer in those films, as well as Rachel Weisz, who portrayed Hannah’s sister.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who are better known as Radio Silence, are directing the revival from a script by David Coggeshall, the writer of “The Family Plan.” Radio Silence is responsible for the “Ready or Not” films and also helped revitalize the “Scream” franchise with 2022’s “Scream” and 2023’s “Scream VI.” Universal is backing the film, which will hit theaters on May 19, 2028. Plot details are, for lack of a better phrase, being kept under wraps.
