Mr. Tillis had worked well with Mr. Berger for years in the General Assembly. But on the call last month he was clear: Mr. Berger had to go.
Hand recount set for 3 precincts in tight Berger-Page primary
The next steps in the contested Republican primary between Senate leader Phil Berger and Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page are unfolding as state officials move forward with a targeted hand recount.
Following the state's established random-selection procedure, three precincts will undergo a full hand recount: McLeansville Baptist Church in Guilford County, Oak Ridge Town Hall in Guilford County, and Monroeton in Rockingham County.
Election officials emphasized transparency throughout the selection process, which took roughly three minutes.
Officials used ten 10-sided dice to generate a 10-digit seed number. That number was entered into software that randomly identified one Rockingham County site and two Guilford County sites. Those sites will now undergo a hand recount conducted by a bipartisan elections team.

Phil Berger concedes NC Senate District 26 Republican primary to Sam Page
Phil Berger conceded the North Carolina Senate District 26 Republican primary on Tuesday, congratulating challenger Sam Page after a hand-to-eye recount showed no change in vote totals for the second time.
"While this was a close race, the voters have spoken, and I congratulate Sheriff Page on his victory," Berger said in a statement.
The concession comes after weeks of post-election proceedings. Berger had requested both machine and hand-to-eye recounts and filed formal protests in Rockingham and Guilford counties.
Tuesday morning's hand-to-eye recount results showed no change from previously counted ballots. Guilford County's Board of Elections reported no changes at Oak Ridge Town Hall or McLeansville Baptist Church. Rockingham County's Board of Elections reported identical results to last week's machine recount.
