Arizona State is finalizing a five-year deal with Saint Mary's Randy Bennett to make him the Sun Devils' next head coach, sources told ESPN.
Bennett informed the team of his departure at a meeting Monday afternoon, sources said.
Saint Mary's is expected to promote associate head coach Mickey McConnell as Bennett's replacement, sources told ESPN. McConnell played for Bennett from 2007 to 11 and has been on the Gaels' coaching staff since 2019.
Bennett, 63, is an Arizona native who has guided Saint Mary's to 12 NCAA tournament appearances since taking over in 2001. Under Bennett, Saint Mary's has won at least a share of four straight WCC regular-season championships and gone to each of the past five NCAA tournaments. The Gaels made a Sweet 16 appearance back in 2010 as a 10-seed, upsetting 2-seed Villanova in the second round.
Arizona State basketball hires Randy Bennett, longtime Saint Mary's coach
A significant college basketball coaching shift is happening on the West Coast.
Randy Bennett will be the new Arizona State coach, according to multiple reports, leaving Saint Mary's after spending 25 seasons turning the Gaels into a respectable mid-major program. His final game was a 63-50 loss to No. 10 seed Texas A&M in the first round of the 2026 Men's NCAA Tournament.
The Saint Mary's job was Bennett's first head coaching role when he took it in 2001, taking over a program that had had little success. After just three NCAA Tournaments prior to his arrival, Bennett took the Gaels to the Big Dance 12 times during his tenure, including each of the past five seasons with at least 26 wins in each campaign during the run. The most successful run of Bennett's tenure was the trip to the Sweet 16 in 2010 as a 10th seed.

Bickley: Randy Bennett would be a home run hire for ASU
The Valley is a wonderful place to live. Unless you’re the men’s basketball coach at Arizona State University.
Bennett is reportedly in serious discussions to replace Bobby Hurley at ASU. Some scoff at Bennett’s age (he turns 64 in June) and whether he’s coming to the desert for paid retirement. I do not.
The Mesa native is a proven winner even when handicapped by limited resources. He has led St. Mary’s to 12 NCAA Tournament berths in 25 years. He’s built a program fueled by an international pipeline, good enough to challenge the West Coast mid-major dominance of Gonzaga. He was the WCC Coach of the Year four years in a row (2022-25). He would be a home run hire for ASU.
