Not So Fast, Bill Maher

The comedian was set to receive the Twain Prize before a sudden reversal of course.

You could measure the on-and-off feud between President Trump and the comedian Bill Maher in weeks, years, or decades. Last month, Trump called Maher a “highly overrated LIGHTWEIGHT” in a lengthy Truth Social post. Years ago, he briefly sued Maher for suggesting that his father was an orangutan.

All of which makes Maher an unlikely pick—at least at first blush—to receive the last marquee honor at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts before it shuts down for two years, at Trump’s direction, in July. Maher was chosen to receive this year’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, two people familiar with the selection told us. One of them, who works at the center, said an announcement was expected soon. A third person said that Maher had been offered the award—and that Trump had been supportive of the idea—but was not sure whether Maher had accepted it. All spoke on the condition of anonymity because Maher had not yet been officially announced as the award recipient. As with all decisions involving this president, the move was subject to being reversed until publicly announced.

White House denies Bill Maher will receive Mark Twain Prize after sources say he was offered the honor

The White House has denied that TV host and comedian Bill Maher will receive the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, even though two sources close to the Kennedy Center told CNN he had been offered the honor.

“This is fake news. Bill Maher will NOT be getting this award,” White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told CNN.

A source close to the Kennedy Center said that Maher had previously been told he has been selected, but has not yet accepted. The comedian was said to be seriously considering it, the person added.

The annual award, which is given by the Kennedy Center, honors humorists and comedy. Past recipients have included Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Billy Crystal, Jon Stewart and Adam Sandler. A gala presenting the award brings together comedians and entertainers, and is typically held at the Kennedy Center, which now bears Trump’s name on its facade as the president has sought to remake the arts institution in his image. This year’s award gala will be the last at the Kennedy Center before it closes its doors for a massive two-year renovation.

White House Cancels Kennedy Award to Trump’s Turncoat Friend

Trump’s White House wasted no time shutting down reports that his one-time dinner guest, Bill Maher, would be getting the most prestigious award a comedian can receive.

Maher, 70, had reportedly been tapped as this year’s recipient of the coveted Mark Twain Prize for American Humor—potentially making him the final honoree before the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts undergoes a sweeping overhaul under Trump’s direction.

According to The Atlantic, sources familiar with the process said Maher was chosen by the Kennedy Center’s honors committee. The institution had not officially announced the recipient, and Maher had not publicly acknowledged his apparent selection. CNN similarly cited sources who said he had been chosen.
