Aston Martin's Adrian Newey to step down as team leader – sources

Adrian Newey is set to step back from his team leadership role at Aston Martin to focus solely on technical matters, sources have confirmed to ESPN.

Newey became managing technical partner and shareholder in Aston Martin's F1 team in March 2025, but took on the full team boss role this season as well when Andy Cowell was shuffled out of the same position.

Newey is now relinquishing that role. Autosport reported on Thursday that Aston Martin will hire Audi team boss Jonathan Wheatley.

Sources have told ESPN no agreement has been reached yet but that Wheatley is the likely hire.

An Aston Martin spokesperson said: "The team will not be engaging in media speculation about its senior leadership team. Adrian Newey continues to lead the team as Team Principal and Managing Technical Partner."

Jonathan Wheatley officially leaves Audi, before replacing Adrian Newey at Aston Martin

Jonathan Wheatley is leaving the Audi Formula 1 team with immediate effect, ahead of his impending move to Aston Martin.

Motorsport revealed on Thursday that Adrian Newey was set to step down from his team principal duties, which he assumed under three months ago, to focus on technical matters – and would be replaced by Audi team boss Wheatley.

The decision was made amid Aston Martin’s disastrous start to F1’s new technical era in 2026, with the Honda power unit’s vibrations preventing the Newey-designed AMR26 from completing grand prix races due to battery reliability issues and driver health concerns.

The team’s downfall comes as billionaire owner Lawrence Stroll has invested tremendously in making the Silverstone-based outfit a title contender, with a state-of-the-art campus populated with elite F1 engineers like Newey and former Mercedes lynchpin Andy Cowell.

Jonathan Wheatley: Aston Martin target Audi F1 boss for team principal role under Adrian Newey

Jonathan Wheatley joined Audi in March last year but is wanted by Aston Martin

Audi team principal Jonathan Wheatley has been targeted by Aston Martin to lead their troubled Formula 1 team.

Aston Martin team owner Lawrence Stroll has made Wheatley an offer to run the race team under managing technical partner Adrian Newey but no contract has yet been signed, insiders have told BBC Sport.

Wheatley joined Audi only a year ago and has been based at its chassis headquarters in Hinwil in Switzerland. Among the reasons for his desire to move on is said to be the appeal of a return to the UK.
