Colts sign two safeties to compete for starting role; what we know
INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts didn’t take long to fill the spots left open by the free-agency departures of Nick Cross and Rodney Thomas II.
Indianapolis is signing veteran safety Jonathan Owens and young Cowboys safety Juanyeh Thomas, league sources told IndyStar on Friday, two players who will have a chance to compete for the playing time left open by the two departures.
Neither player was a full-time starter in 2025, but the pairing represents two different approaches to the position.
Owens, who turns 31 in July and has the higher profile by virtue of his marriage to Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, brings experience. Undrafted out of Missouri Western, Owens has spent seven seasons in the NFL with the Texans, Packers and Bears, playing a variety of roles, rising to the level of starter in 2022 with Houston and 2023 with Green Bay.
