Gretchen Whitmer says she secured ice storm relief pledge from Donald Trump

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer met again with President Donald Trump in the White House Tuesday, lobbying him for money to keep invasive carp out of the Great Lakes, fighter jets in Macomb County and relief for storms.

It was at least her third publicized meeting with Trump since he began his second term in 2025.

Whitmer, a Democrat, said the Republican president pledged to provide more aid to northern Michigan, which was slammed by ice storms in March 2025.

More details weren’t immediately available Tuesday, nor was information about the likelihood of relief for last week’s deadly tornadoes in southwest Michigan.

President Trump pledges more funds for Michigan ice storm recovery

NORTHERN MICHIGAN (WPBN/WGTU)–Governor Gretchen Whitmer met with President Trump and members of his team at the White House where President Trump gave an update on the request for more FEMA funding for recovery efforts after the 2025 Ice Storm, according to Governor Whitmer's press secretary, Stacey LaRouche.

"The president agreed to deliver additional federal funding to help Michiganders with the cost of recovery efforts, and the governor is thankful for this extra assistance," said LaRouche.

In July, President Trump approved at least $50 million in federal disaster funding, but noted that the actual amount could increase based on the number of eligible applicants and projects approved by FEMA.

Federal aid approved for northern Michigan ice storm recovery after Gov. Whitmer meets with President Trump

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer met with President Donald Trump at the White House March 10 to discuss disaster recovery and critical infrastructure projects. During the visit, the president approved federal funding to assist northern Michigan communities with recovery efforts following a historic ice storm in 2025.

The federal funding comes after months of coordination between House Republicans and the Trump administration following the Spring 2025 ice storm. The assistance is intended to help northern Michigan residents, small businesses and utilities cover the costs of recovery.

Whitmer provided an update during the meeting regarding deadly tornadoes that struck southwest Michigan on Friday. She also requested an update on the state’s appeal for Federal Emergency Management Agency funding to assist residents and small businesses affected by the ice storms.
