Source: 49ers adding Matt Eberflus to defensive staff
NFL Hall of Famer Steve Young talks to Rich Eisen about what the 49ers need to do to contend next year. (1:30)
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — After saying goodbye to Robert Saleh and Gus Bradley in January, the San Francisco 49ers are adding another experienced defensive coach to Kyle Shanahan's staff.
A source told ESPN on Thursday that Shanahan is hiring former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus to the Niners' defensive staff. No title has been made official, but the role is expected to be similar to the assistant head coach/defense job that Bradley held for San Francisco in 2025. NFL Network first reported Eberflus' hiring.
Why the 49ers are hiring Matt Eberflus as their assistant head coach of defense
The San Francisco 49ers have hired Matt Eberflus as their assistant head coach of defense, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Eberflus was the defensive coordinator with the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 through 2021. He was the Chicago Bears head coach from 2022 through 2024, before serving as the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator last season.
After having Gus Bradley in the building in what was likely a similar role last season, Eberflus will oversee the 49ers’ defense alongside Raheem Morris.
Looking at the cumulative statistics from 2018 through 2021, the Colts were 12th in EPA per play and 18th in defensive success rate. The Bears were 29th in EPA per play and 26th in success rate under Eberflus. This past season, Dallas finished 32nd and 31st in EPA per play and success rate.

Controversial Cowboys Assistant Lands Major Role With New Team
The Dallas Cowboys have made major changes to their coaching staff this offseason after missing out on the playoffs once again.
The Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus after just one year in the role. Dallas finished the regular season allowing the most points (30.1) and passing yards (251.5) per game, and changes clearly had to be made.
As a result, Dallas hired Philadelphia Eagles defensive backs coach Christian Parker as the team's next defensive coordinator.
Eberflus, who previously served as head coach of the Chicago Bears for three seasons, was suddenly out of a job after the Cowboys decided to move on, but he's now landed back on his feet with another NFC team.
