Over 120 images of interstellar comet captured by Jupiter spacecraft. 3/ATLAS revealed like never before
The European Space Agency has released a new image of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, captured by one of its spacecraft on the way to Jupiter.
The image was captured when the comet was close to the Sun, spewing out dust and gas.
In the image, scientists spotted a bright halo of gas surrounding the comet's head, known as the coma.
A long tail is visible too, along with rays, jets streams and filaments emanating from 3I/ATLAS.
The image was captured by the European Space Agency's Juice spacecraft, which is on its way to Jupiter to study the gas giant's icy moons.

This striking image from the science camera on ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) shows interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS spewing dust and gas. The tiny nucleus of the comet (not visible) is surrounded by a bright halo of gas known as the coma. A long tail stretches away from the comet, and we see hints of rays, jets, streams and filaments.
The inset in the image shows the same data, but processed to highlight the coma structure. The arrows in the top left indicate the direction in which the comet was moving (blue) and the relative direction of the Sun (yellow). While 3I/ATLAS is a visitor from interstellar space, travelling from outside the Solar System, its behaviour is completely in line with that expected from a ‘normal’ comet.

Pictures of 3I/ATLAS will soon be all we have to remind us of the strange interstellar comet and its brief visit to our cosmic neighborhood.
Fortunately, thanks to the world's space agencies, we'll have quite the photographic collection of the intriguing object, which in 2025 attracted plenty of buzz when it became the center of an alien spaceship conspiracy theory.
NASA officials and scientists have long pushed back on the notion that 3I/ATLAS is extraterrestrial in nature, but that doesn't make the comet any less fascinating. Because 3I/ATLAS's time in our solar system is fleeting, the world's astronomers and space agencies have been racing to study planetary material that formed from another star.
