NCAA appeals Trinidad Chambliss' injunction, challenges his eligibility to play in 2026 season
The NCAA is appealing an injunction granted to Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chamlbiss which granted him the right to play in 2026. The 658-page filing obtained by ESPN urges the Mississippi State Supreme Court to overturn a decision made by a local jurisdiction in February.
"The preliminary injunction provides Respondent with an additional year of eligibility that is unavailable to other student-athletes under NCAA bylaws. Under the trial court's order, Ole Miss will enjoy the benefit of rostering a star quarterback who is no longer eligible to compete," the document reads. "Such an outcome is unfair to Division I schools who follow the rules and must compete against Ole Miss in the 2026-27 season or who may be displaced for postseason competition by Ole Miss. That harm cannot be undone through an appellate decision that follows a final judgment on merits."
Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss' injunction appealed by NCAA
OXFORD — Ole Miss football quarterback Trinidad Chambliss' fight to return for the 2026 season is not over.
The NCAA is appealing Chambliss' preliminary injunction, according to documents obtained by the Clarion Ledger on March 5.
The NCAA is asking the Mississippi State Supreme Court for an interlocutory review of the trial Chambliss got under judge Robert Whitwell in Mississippi Chancery Court on Feb. 12.
NCAA attorneys J Douglas Minor, Taylor Askew and David Zeitlin are named on the appeal. All three lawyers represented the NCAA in Pittsboro on Feb. 12.
"Respondent (Chambliss) has exhausted his eligibility to compete in NCAA Division I football because his five-year period to complete up to four seasons of competition under the NCAA's 'Five-Year Rule'"' has terminated," the 18-page petition filed March 5 says.

NCAA appealing Trinidad Chambliss injunction that granted Ole Miss QB eligibility for 2026 season: Reports
The NCAA is appealing the preliminary injunction a Mississippi state judge granted Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, according to multiple reports Thursday.
The injunction reportedly prevents the NCAA from prohibiting the 23-year-old Chambliss from playing until his eligibility case is fully litigated, effectively affording him eligibility for the 2026 season.
Chambliss argued that he should have received a medical redshirt in 2022, when he lost a year of eligibility, despite not appearing in a game at Ferris State, while dealing with health issues that ultimately resulted in him getting his tonsils removed in 2024.
But, in a filing to the Mississippi State Supreme Court Thursday, the NCAA reportedly requested that the injunction be overruled and petitioned the court for interlocutory review of the trial court's order, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported.
