When Libby Hume steps into her French classroom at Auburn High School, she brings with her not only a deep love of language but also the kind of early‑career excellence that is now being recognized statewide.
Hume, who teaches French at Auburn High and is an Auburn College of Education graduate student in the French Education Alternative Master’s Program, has been selected as the Alabama World Languages Association (AWLA) Promising New Teacher of the Year — the organization’s highest honor for new world language educators.
Altamont teacher named Alabama French Teacher of the Year
Allison Harris, a French teacher at the Altamont School, has been named the Alabama World Language Association’s 2026 French Teacher of Excellence and Teacher of the Year.
Harris received the honor at the organization’s annual conference held Feb. 6-7 in Mobile. In its citation, the AWLA stated that Harris “exemplifies excellence in world language education through her passion, leadership, and commitment to students."
Harris joined Altamont’s faculty in 2013. Since then, she has become a strong advocate for language instruction on campus. Altamont Academic Director of Languages Larry McCain described her as “a student-centered, tireless advocate for world language instruction."

The distinctions were handed out at AWLA’s annual conference in Mobile on Feb. 6–7, highlighting both early‑career promise and long‑standing classroom leadership in Alabama.
Libby Hume, now in her second year of teaching French at Auburn High School, was selected as AWLA’s Promising New Teacher of the Year, an honor limited to teachers with fewer than three years of experience and presented to just one educator statewide each year. Hume began teaching and simultaneously enrolled in Auburn’s French Education Alternative Master’s Program in August 2024. Her nomination was put forward last fall by Sara Ahnell, an assistant clinical professor and program coordinator for Foreign Language Education at Auburn’s College of Education, who previously received the same AWLA award early in her career.
