Why Frances Tiafoe had one of his sponsors hidden with marker pen at Delray Beach Open – The Athletic

Before Frances Tiafoe could begin his Delray Open campaign in Florida, he had to go through a tennis experience usually reserved for high-school graduates: Being approached by someone brandishing a marker pen.

This was no senior, but chair umpire Joshua Brace. Brace approached Tiafoe, the No. 8 seed, and began scribbling over a white logo on his upper chest. The American laughed, and pointed at another logo elsewhere on his sleeveless black top.

Once Brace was done, the formerly white Barclays bank patch on Tiafoe’s top was — partly — covered up. Satisfied, Brace returned to the chair, and Tiafoe’s match with Rinky Hijikata of Australia could begin.

Frances Tiafoe forced to black out sponsor logo before Delray Beach match

The chair umpire delayed the start of his match against Rinky Hijikata after Tiafoe’s shirt violated ATP logo rules.

Frances Tiafoe had a strange start to his match at the Delray Beach Open on Monday.

The No. 8 seed opened his campaign at the ATP 250 event in South Florida against Aussie qualifier Rinky Hijikata. But before their match began, umpire Joshua Brace climbed down from his chair and halted Tiafoe, informing him that his shirt violated the ATP’s logo rules.

Frances Tiafoe covers Barclays logo during match due to ATP uniform logo rule

Tennis player Frances Tiafoe had to cover the Barclays logo on his shirt during his match at the Delray Beach Open on Monday due to ATP Tour rules stating that “players can have two logos on the front of their shirts, whether they have sleeves or are sleeveless,” and he had three, according to James Hansen of THE ATHLETIC. The manufacturer logo — which is Lululemon for Tiafoe’s clothing — is “included in the count,” so Tiafoe’s two further logos, one for UKG and one for Barclays, were “in violation of the tour’s rules.” At the match, chair umpire Joshua Brace approached Tiafoe and “began scribbling over” the white Barclays logo on his upper chest. Tiafoe “laughed, and pointed at another logo elsewhere on his sleeveless black top.” Tiafoe “ordinarily positions the UKG logo on his sleeve, where players are allowed two further logos,” but because this kit was sleeveless, he had “run out of space.” Hansen wrote while top tennis players will have “year-round sponsorships,” the business of tennis fashion and deals heats up “around sleeve and shirt patches at bigger tournaments” (THE ATHLETIC, 2/17).
