A Long Island native is looking to help lead Team USA to a gold medal that has remained elusive to them for 46 years.
The men's hockey team won its first three games in Milan Cortina, and is hoping to make it four in a row in the quarterfinal against Sweden.
Making his debut for the U.S. in the 2026 Winter Olympics is Charlie McAvoy, a 28-year-old from Long Beach. The defenseman has played for the Boston Bruins ever since he was drafted out of Boston University in 2016, but his family says it was his upbringing on Long Island that helped lead him to this moment.

Throughout the Winter Olympics, Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy is giving readers of The Athletic an inside look at Team USA.
At 28 years old, McAvoy, a former Boston University standout and three-time gold medalist in international tournaments, is in his ninth full NHL season. Last weekend, he was named one of Auston Matthews’ two alternate captains at the Olympics, with Matthew Tkachuk being the other.

Charlie McAvoy is moving forward from Sandis Vilmanis' hit to the Bruins defenseman’s jaw.
“He did apologize after the (USA-Latvia Olympic) game,” McAvoy wrote in his Olympic diary for The Athletic. “I probably shouldn’t get into it because what he said was between us, but I appreciated it.”
The two were seen having a brief conversation after USA’s game against Latvia.
Team USA’s alternate captain took a high elbow to the face Vilmanis in the Bruins’ final game before the Olympic break against the Florida Panthers.
McAvoy, who was wearing a fishbowl due to a broken jaw he suffered in November, needed to be helped off the ice. He eventually returned to the game.
