Czechia, Sweden tasked with tough decisions in goal at start of knockout stage
Dostal, Vladar among options against Denmark; Swedes likely to choose Gustavsson or Markstrom vs. Latvia
MILAN — Team Czechia and Team Sweden each boast three capable NHL goalies. Each has used two thus far in the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
They now must choose one to play in a win-or-go-home qualification game on Tuesday, knowing a win means playing in the quarterfinals Wednesday.
It is the single biggest decision Czechia coach Radim Rulik and Sweden coach Sam Hallam will make before taking the ice at Santagiulia Arena on Tuesday.
Czechia will face Team Denmark (10:40 a.m. ET; Peacock, ICI Tele, CBC Gem, SN) before Sweden takes on Team Latvia (3:10 p.m. ET; Peacock, USA, ICI Tele, CBC Gem).
Wild's Filip Gustavsson Named Olympic Disappointment
As we go through some of the major takeaways in the first week of men's hockey at the 2026 Winter Olympics, a whole lot of people are having their takes. And while most of it is praising Juraj Slafkovsky for being some beast that loves international tournaments, or Team Canada seeming unbeatable with the amount of firepower they have, there have been some people pointing fingers.
Largely, at Team Sweden and who is in between the pipes.
Seen as one of the pre-tournament dark horses to not have the gold medal going to North America, Sweden has largely been a disappointment. Whether it is them seeing Filip Forsberg as a 13th forward for some reason, or just not really having a whole lot of inspiring performances, nothing really stands out as much as what the Minnesota Wild's Filip Gustavsson has done.

Jacob Markstrom starts for Sweden vs. Latvia in qualification game at Olympics
Goaltender Jacob Markstrom will start for Team Sweden against Latvia Tuesday in the men’s Olympic hockey qualification round.
Sweden head coach Sam Hallam told reporters on Monday he knew who would start in net Tuesday against Latvia, but wasn’t ready to reveal his choice.
Both Markstrom and Filip Gustavsson saw action in the preliminary round at the Olympic tournament. Gustavsson’s Wild teammate Jesper Wallstedt is the third goalie on Sweden’s roster and while serve Markstrom’s backup on Tuesday.
Forward Jesper Bratt and defenceman Rasmus Andersson were also scratched in addition to Gustavsson.
Should Sweden win on Tuesday, the team will advance to face the United States in the quarter-finals on Wednesday, leaving Hallam with a decision on whether to use the same goaltender on back-to-back days.
