Team Canada got off to a solid start in the figure skating team event at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
After the rhythm dance, the pairs short program, and the women’s short program, Canada is in fifth place. That is the cutoff spot for advancement to the final phase of the competition. The five teams that will compete in the free skates will not be confirmed until after the men’s short programs take place on Saturday.
After the first day, Canada accumulated 19 points, putting them one point behind Georgia and three back of third place Italy. The United States leads with 25 points while Japan is second with 23 points.

Canada’s Gogolev 10th after men's short program, USA's Malinin leads
Canada's Stephen Gogolev and the rest of the men's figure skating field will need something special to catch Ilia Malinin of the United States.
Gogolev, 21, scored an 87.41 in the men's short program at the Olympic Winter Games on Tuesday and sits in 10th place.
He is well behind Malinin, who is in first place after a breathtaking performance that saw him score 108.16.
The 21-year-old American, who goes by the self-proclaimed nickname the "Quad God," is the two-time reigning men's world champion and has not lost an event since a Grand Prix in November 2023.
Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama is in second after a score of 103.07, and Adam Siao Him Fa of France sits third with a 102.55.
