Heading into the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, Nathan Chen was a massive star and one of the primary favorites to win the gold medal in men’s figure skating.
The then-18-year-old had won every competition he entered that season, including the Grand Prix Final. People had nicknamed him “Quad King” for his ability to land multiple quadruple jumps. Yet in his first individual performance of the games, he fell on his opening quadruple lutz, stepped out of his second jumping pass — a quad toe loop — and put both hands down on a triple axel.

Nathan Chen isn’t skating in Italy, but men’s figure skating still revolves around him

Nathan Chen hopped on a plane to Italy. This week, he’ll be in the Milano Ice Skating Arena, analyzing every move of the men’s Olympic figure skating field. Yet he’ll have an unusual vantage point for these Winter Games.
“Now,†said Chen, “I get to see what it looks like on the other side.â€
Chen never officially retired, but he hasn’t competed since 2022, when he became the only male singles skater to win two gold medals in a single Olympics. His main role in Italy will be schmoozing with sponsors and offering Utah 2034 donors commentary on the men’s skating competition.
