French biathlete guilty of fraud wins Olympic gold while scammed teammate comes 80th

An athlete convicted of committing credit card fraud against one of her national teammates has won an Olympic gold medal for France in the women’s 15km biathlon, beating her victim to do it.

Julia Simon, 29, was handed a €15,000 fine and a three-month suspended sentence last October after she was found to have spent more than €2,000 using card details belonging to Justine Braisaz-Bouchet, also 29, who finished in 80th place in the same race. A third member of the French team, Lou Jeanmonnot, won the silver.

Simon was also found to have used the card details of the team physiotherapist to make purchases between 2021 and 2022. She denied the crime for three years, claiming she had been a victim of identity theft, before finally admitting her guilt in a court hearing in Albertville last October after she was found to have photos of the credit card on her phone. “I confess the accusations but I don’t remember committing them,” she said at the time. “It’s like a blackout.”

French biathlon star Julia Simon wins 15km gold at 2026 Winter Olympics after suspension for credit card fraud

Julia Simon captured her second gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics on Wednesday, topping the women's 15km individual biathlon despite a turbulent few months in France. Simon, 29, missed only once on the shooting range and overcame a penalty in the first standing stage to take the victory. Her French teammate Lou Jeanmonnot claimed silver, while Bulgaria's Lora Hristova earned bronze.

The win comes less than a year after Simon faced legal and sporting sanctions for theft and credit card fraud. Last October, a French court found Simon guilty of using the bank card of teammate Justine Braisaz-Bouchet for online purchases exceeding 2,000 euros ($2,300). Simon admitted the offenses and received a three-month suspended prison sentence and a 15,000 euros ($17,800) fine. She also used the card of a team physiotherapist between 2021 and 2022.

French biathlete Julia Simon wins gold after credit card fraud conviction

Biathlete Julia Simon was triumphant again, winning a gold medal in the 15km individual biathlon race at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics on Wednesday, Feb. 11.

Simon missed only once during her time on the shooting range and rebounded from a penalty in the first standing stage. Her teammate, Lou Jeanmonnot, took home the silver, and Bulgaria’s Lora Hristova won bronze.

But Simon, who also won gold in biathlon mixed relay for France, is fortunate that she was able to compete in the Olympics at all.

Last October, Simon was charged and found guilty of theft and credit card fraud, accused of using the bank card of France teammate Justine Braisaz-Bouchet.
